Schools might have been shut, but children continued their learning even during the pandemic. Despite the inequalities and digital divide, the 15th Annual Status Report of Education Report (ASER 2020) Rural, reflected the resilience shown towards learning as 11% of all rural families bought a new phone since lockdown began and 80% of those were smartphones. Also, more children joined government schools than private schools.
ALIG Educational and Welfare Society partnered with Agastya International Foundation based in Karnataka to stimulate the creative thinking potential of our government school children in Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal with an emphasis on science education. It seeks to redefine ways to gaining knowledge of science through an innovative education model that is holistic and experiential which provides opportunities to imagine and explore one’s creativity with self-confidence.
A total of 250 government school students from class 5 to 8 are regularly taking the live classes via google meet that occurs weekly from Monday to Thursday and Friday is a doubt class where the students can reach out to the AIF instructors in case, they want more guidance and clarity on the taught topic. There is also a WhatsApp group where students submit their regular assignments, projects, everyday learning, and doubts.
Online Science Program is so supple and establishes a sense of comfort and develops a community of learners. The curriculum has divided between theoretical, experimental logics, and facts which promote communication through quality asynchronous discussion between students and instructors. Along with all this, the curriculum is very exciting as we can guess its flexibility and feasibility by its theoretical-practical coordination.
Contents like a shadow, measurement, respiration, friction, physical and chemical changes, reversible and irreversible changes, mirror, sounds, graphs, kitchen chemistry, photosynthesis, root system, pressure, wind, etc. have been imparted with audio-visual teaching aids during live classes and to make them clearer for students these topics are equipped with live science projects assignments like; plantation at home, science-based model from leaves, battery and torch experiments.
By all due online classes, methods, and strategies students have gained so many boosters to develop search engines for completing their science assignments and projects by themselves. They have generated their self-exploration mode during these classes!
