Literacy in India is the key for socio-economic progress. Indian literacy rate has grown to 74% (2011 Census figure), but there is a wide gender disparity in the literacy rate in India: 80.9% for men and 64.60% for women. Although there has been a jump in India's adult literacy ranking, from 121 in 2016 to 105 in year 2017. Yet, the adult literacy rate at 61.3% is still way below the 76% average for developing countries and 81.7% global average. Students of Government Schools, where ALIG is engaged, are trying to educate adults in their own neighborhoods. As of today, there are 45 centres with 236 adult beneficiaries of this initiative.
